Jiang, D. Qian, L. Pan, Z. et al. Detection of OH 18 cm lines in 3I/ATLAS with FAST
ATel #17733; on 31 Mar 2026

I’ve posted about FAST before. You know, FAST (Five-hundred meter Aperture SphericTelescope)- the largest single radio telescope (and therefore largest telescope) in the world. Using FAST, Jiang et al. constrain the activity of our little visitor via its emission of hydroxyl- OH, the breakdown product when water is exposed to the Sun’s ultraviolet. An OH spectral line happens to be in the radio band. Measuring OH then gives us a handle on comet gases.
