Dr. Elizabeth Tasker Interview

Very interesting interview this week in the Art Astra podcast:

Episode 15 Science Communication for International Audiences with Dr. Elizabeth Tasker

You can use the direct link, or a podcast aggregator (no shortage of them).

Dr. Tasker is a member of JAXA‘s Hayabusa2 science team, and now the MMX project as well. That’s right, a Japanese organization running Japanese programs with Japanese-government funding has a gaijin on the staff. Tasker started by being a professor at a Japanese university, before being hired by the flight projects. But of course, being bilingual, she naturally started doing outreach for JAXA in general, and Haya2 specifically. She is now continuing that role for MMX.

The podcast covers her experiences in publicity and media, as befits the Art Astra site. Yes, there are hurdles to overcome in this line of work: the inherent difficulty in spanning different languages and cultures, and the fundamental need to make science accessible to the audience.

Give it a listen. It’s about average length for a technical podcast episode, ~42 min.
