No less than Nature Astronomy has just published (17 September 2025):

Egal, A. Vida, D. Colas, F. et al.  Catastrophic disruption of asteroid 2023 CX1 and implications for planetary defence  s41550-025-02659-8

Asteroid 2023 CX1 was discovered in- yes, 2023- and immediately fell on northern France. Meteorites were recovered, making this a sampled asteroid in the direct sense. This particular fall is notable since a meteor tracking system, FRIPON (Fireball Recovery and InterPlanetary Observation Network) caught the event. And what better purpose could an observation network serve, than to broaden our view? The 2023 CX1 meteor was an outlier: the body stayed intact longer and lower. Apparently, this was one strong asteroid. The resulting shockwave also differed from “normal” meteors. Egal et al. then caution us about our asteroid and meteor assumptions. If 2023 CX1 is more than just one exceptional case, we may have to adjust estimates of ground damage from asteroid impacts.
