The LSST@Europe7 meeting will be this Sep 15-19, 2025, Poznań, Poland. What’s the business of Europe in a NSF–DOE telescope, you say? Explicitly, the UK and France will (are?) contribute supercomputer cycles to the analysis effort- the petabytes of analysis effort. Scientists (both astronomers, and data scientists) of other nations are committing to in-kind contributions as well. And, implicitly, the images from LSST are just not embargoed, firewalled, or encrypted. In a vague enough sense, anyone taking the time and effort to sift through the ultra-high-res shots can try to see what they want to see. These nations, with a tradition of astronomy, are then contributing that astronomy.

…the history of astronomy has been marked by scarcity: a scarcity of glass, of skilled observers and their observing hours, and a scarcity of humanity’s top minds, to make sense of exactly what we just observed through that glass. Now, it’s time to move on from a scarcity mindset. The Rubin Observatory means pixels for everyone- more than enough pixels.
