Vera Rubin Upstanding

Okay, one more Rubin Observatory post:

gizmodo.com/rubin-observatorys-stunning-result-proves-its-a-game-changer-for-spotting-dangerous-asteroids-2000621581

I’ve already posted that the Vera Rubin Observatory will be– and now demonstrates it is– the new and undisputed champion of asteroid discovery. Let the conspiracy theory nuts take heed: NASA is not ‘hiding the killer asteroid’. The full name of the site is the “NSFDoE Vera C. Rubin Observatory” and NASA has no direct involvement. Which, in turn, means that the skies will be independently searched by multiple organizations: NASA (through NASA-funded telescopes, actually operated by the University of Arizona and University of Hawaii), this NSF-DoE led consortium, European nations (both at the national level, and through ESA), and Japan and China (via the Purple Mountain Observatory, the new WFST, and lesser apertures). Again, let it be said: asteroid conspiracy theories are for conspiracy nuts.

If anything, Gizmodo got the story straight: Vera Rubin now stands apart, and NASA has absolutely nothing to say, because… say what? No one owns the sky; anyone is free to look who will open their eyes. Granted, Vera Rubin cost over half a billion dollars, but short of that, amateurs are doing viable asteroid work; certainly, at the university scale things are moving along.

The sky is big, and full of interesting, valuable asteroids. Multiple people at multiple orgs realize this, and are acting appropriately. Some in the public do not realize this, and act inappropriately.
