Look, a paper in Journal Of Geophysical Research: Planets (vol. 130, #4) for a change:
Maurel, C. Clavé, E. Gattacecca, J. et al. Magnetization of Iron Meteorites up to the Meter in Size as Possible Analogs for Asteroid Psyche 2024JE008810
We were right to send a mission to (16) Psyche; I can say that, without the craft arriving yet and sending back one bit. To an extent, we have “Psyche analogs” in the form of iron and stony-iron meteorites. And yet, all these are human-scale samples, ranging up to meters in size. We don’t know what a hundred-kilometer iron-based body looks like, or what history it could have had. It’s possible the asteroid will show us some sort of new geology and physics, like ferrovulcanism or some sort of charging phenomenon. And while we’re at it, Psyche is in the outer Main Belt. Our comprehension of Main-Belt objects that far out is still limited; (4) Vesta still surprised us, despite being in the inner, more Earthlike region of the Belt.
I sometimes wonder about those people that got Psyche-themed tattoos. Are they going to be embarrassing in a few years? Or just unimaginative?
