This ~month’s Bulletin on Small Bodies Nomenclature from the IAU lists new asteroid name (270588) Laurieanderson. The “Mars crosser” (technically only), formerly 2002 LA6, is now named for musician and multimedia artist Laurie Anderson, whose resume makes the rest of us look like spambots.
Laura Phillips Anderson, officially a musician trained in violin, has branched out to other instruments and singing (including early synth stuff), photography, a feature-length documentary (Heart of a Dog), and live multimedia shows. She has a Saturday Night Live gig (Season 11, Ep 15- April 19, 1986) under her belt, eventually leading to a role as NASA’s (first ever) artist-in-residence. Big Science indeed.
