Forbes, J. C. Butler, H. The size of 3I/ATLAS from non-gravitational acceleration
The nucleus of a comet is either 1) distant, and hard to make out, or 2) close, warm, and obscured by the coma. Estimating the size and other aspects of a nucleus per se, is then a black art. Here, Forbes and Butler attempt the dynamic method: measuring nongravitational force (i. e., jetting), assuming the mass, then deriving the diameter from an assumed density value. Needless to say, this is a lot of assumptions, in a chain. The Forbes and Butler estimated diameter is, then, smaller than many other estimates, and they are well aware of the issue.
