Nakahashi, T. Miyahara, M. Yamaguchi, A. Experimental constrants on the shock history of CI chondrites and Ryugu grains Art 119559 .2025.119559
Shock manifests itself as crystal defects. Therefore, we can see signs of impacts on asteroids in their crystal structures. There are also lesser issues, like dehydration/devolatilization. We only have six unambiguous examples of the CI meteorite group; the Hayabusa2 samples of Ryugu form a seventh specimen, untouched by Earth’s atmosphere and biosphere. Therefore, we are looking for (more) similarities, and the differences (indicating Earth effects) between the meteorites and Ryugu. Nakahashi et al. go to the trouble of obtaining rare meteorite material, and shocking them. Direct!
