…COIAS Continued Continued…

I wrote previously (twice and thrice) on the Japanese COIAS Program (Come On! Impacting ASteroids) and its connection to the manga/TV show Asteroid in Love (Japanese: Koisuru Asteroido, abbreviated Koi As). More recognition: comet C/2015 K7 is now named COIAS.

Per the IAU‘s Working Group on Small Bodies Nomenclature, multiple comets, including the former C/2015 K7, are now given names. One of them is now named after the open (public, volunteer-based) search program, where frames taken by the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii get checked for any incidental moving objects. Given the wide field of view (relatively) of the Subaru HSC instrument, the odds of such an incidental catch are not bad. It’s more a matter of recognizing the ‘background’ intruders, which is where the volunteers come in.

Thanks, COIAS program and all volunteers, and congratulations on the commemoration!
