Note, Paper: PSJ Update

Hard to ‘render’ Planetary Science Journal– the title is less like a print journal, more like a blog. Some recent items from it:

Ernst, C. M. Daly, R. T. Fletcher, Z. et al. Calibration and Inflight Performance of DART’s Didymos Reconnaissance and Asteroid Camera for OpNav (DRACO)   volume 5, article 257   ad823a
Phillips, M. S. Udovicic, C. T. Moersch, J. E. et al. HyPyRameter: A Python Toolbox to Calculate Spectral Parameters from Hyperspectral Reflectance Data   5, art. 258   ad81f8
Rizos, J. L. Sunshine, J. Daly, R. T. et al. New Candidates for Organic-rich Regions on Ceres   5:262  ad86ba
Afghan, Q. Jones, G. H. Battams, K. et al. Characterization of the Dust and Sodium Tails of Comet C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) from Parker Solar Probe and Amateur Observations   5:264   ad856b
Szalay, J. R. Pokorny, P. Malaspina, D. M. et al. Size Distribution of Small Grains in the Inner Zodiacal Cloud   5:266  ad8b27

DART– more than just a stunt. The DRACO camera onboard DART imaged Dimorphos, and to an extent Didymos, and we can extract science info from the morphologies. That is, if we can calibrate the images that came down, based on camera behavior. Here is that camera info.

Speaking of which, software tools are a greater and greater part of the process. Here’s another tool; Python, in particular, is a popular software platform in these fields.

Organics on Ceres. Need I say more? Rizos et al. end their abstract with ‘endogeneous organics’.

And speaking of volatile activity, let’s not leave out the (unambiguous) comets. Comet NEOWISE was nice, from an aesthetic and activity perspective.

…aaand speaking of comet activity, comets (and some asteroids) emit both gases and solid bits. Study of the particle population left by all these small bodies is an indirect angle on them; what did they leave, implying how, when, where? The puzzle pieces fit together, giving us the picture.
