On The Rocks: The Sacred to the Profane

  • by

In this biweek’s IAU WGSBN Bulletin (#2413), good news and ‘bad’ news.

The asteroid, formerly under the provisional designation (2001) CC21, has now been officially named. The small body is now one of the targets of the Hayabusa2 extended mission (“Hayabusa2#”, pronounced “2-sharp”, for “Small Hazardous Asteroid Reconnaissance Probe”). The new name is (98943) Torifune, after a folk Japanese deity.

Same issue: the asteroid, formerly 2000 GG167, is now (47931) Stifler. No, that name’s the chief of the Maine Mineral and Gem Museum, not the “American Pie” character.

Happy Friday!
